Prop 1D in the News Campaign Press Releases

4/20/09: Leave First 5 money alone; reject Proposition 1D.  San Jose Mercury News

4/4/09: "Supposedly this raid on First 5 funding will end after five years. In Contra Costa, it would mean an overall loss of $26 million. If California's budget woes continue, however, you can bet that the shift would be permanent, in which case the loss would be even greater." Contra Costa Times.

4/2/09: "I don't know about you, but I'm just plain tired of the money shell game. Diverting money from a program that's working to mask fiscal mismanagement elsewhere isn't the answer. Let's not make matters worse. Vote NO on Propositions 1D and 1E." Red Bluff Daily News.

3/31/09: "What sense does it make to lose 11 years of careful work, for the paltry $268 million a year that the state will take from the First 5 programs? That isn't even a decent drop in the bucket of California's $42 billion deficit. It is too great a sacrifice, for so small a contribution to solving the state's fiscal problems." Mercury News

3/30/09: "I oppose taking funds that the voters approved for specific programs to put into the general fund. What is the point in voting for programs if the money is seized for the general fund?” Santa Rosa Press Democrat

3/29/09: Richard Riordan, Former California Secretary of Education and Mayor of Los Angeles: "Then there's Proposition 1D, with its clunky and dishonest title: "Protects Children's Services Funding. Helps Balance State Budget." How does it "protect" children's services funding? By taking $1.6 billion currently committed to children's health services and preschool and throwing it into the budget maw." Los Angeles Times

3/27/09: “We shouldn’t balance the budget at the cost of our children’s health and education,” Supervisor Katcho Achadjian said Tuesday. San Luis Obispo Tribune

3/25/09: "The Solano County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to oppose propositions 1D and 1E, which will appear on the May 19 ballot. ... "We can't be hypnotized by Sacramento speak," said Supervisor Linda Seifert. "By taking any positions besides opposing this would be a disservice to the children in this county." Vacaville Reporter.

3/15/09: "... the bottom line on the measures borrowing from voter-mandated programs to fund other things is that they mostly just move money around. They don't solve long-term budget problems." Click here for the full article from The Daily Breeze.

3/13/09: KTTV Fox 11 in Los Angeles reports that "Tens of thousands of preschool students statewide may become victims of the states' budget battle. As Phil Shuman explains, it's all part of a complex deal struck last month to try and close that massive budget gap here in California."
